DIY Doll Clothes: 5 Simple Projects for Beginners

There is something deeply satisfying about making your own doll clothes. Whether you want to create a one-of-a-kind outfit or just enjoy the craft of miniature sewing, DIY doll clothes are a rewarding project that does not require advanced skills. At niannyyhouse, we appreciate the artistry behind handmade doll fashion, and in this guide we share 5 simple DIY projects that any beginner can complete in an afternoon.

Project 1: No-Sew Fleece Scarf

Skill level: Absolute beginner | Time: 10 minutes

The simplest DIY project there is. Cut a strip of fleece fabric 15cm long and 2cm wide. Cut 1cm fringe at both ends. No sewing required — fleece does not fray. You now have a cozy winter scarf for your 20cm doll. Make several in different colors to match different outfits.

Project 2: Simple T-Shirt from an Old Sock

Skill level: Beginner | Time: 20 minutes

Materials: An old stretchy sock, scissors, needle and thread (or fabric glue).

  1. Cut off the sock just above the heel
  2. Cut armholes on both sides about 1cm from the top edge
  3. Hem the armholes with a simple stitch or fabric glue
  4. Cut a small neckline

You now have a fitted T-shirt for your 20cm doll, made from materials you already have. Compare your DIY creation with our Stripe T-Shirt (2-Pack) ($8.90) to see how yours measures up.

Project 3: Fabric Scrap Vest

Skill level: Beginner | Time: 30 minutes

Materials: Fabric scrap (denim or cotton), scissors, needle and thread, 2 small buttons.

  1. Cut a rectangle of fabric 8cm wide by 6cm tall
  2. Fold in half and cut armholes
  3. Sew the shoulder seams
  4. Sew two buttons on the front
  5. Cut small buttonholes (or use Velcro)

This vest can be layered over any T-shirt for a new look. Pair it with our Baseball Cap for a complete casual outfit.

Project 4: Felt Hat

Skill level: Beginner | Time: 25 minutes

Materials: Sheet of craft felt, scissors, fabric glue.

  1. Cut a circle 6cm in diameter (the brim)
  2. Cut a smaller circle 4cm in diameter (the crown)
  3. Cut a strip 1cm wide and 12cm long (the band)
  4. Glue the crown to the center of the brim
  5. Wrap the band around the base of the crown and glue

This simple felt hat works for 20cm dolls and adds character to any outfit. For dolls with prominent ears like Labubu, leave the front of the brim open to accommodate the ear profile.

Project 5: Simple Skirt from Rectangle

Skill level: Beginner | Time: 20 minutes

Materials: Fabric scrap, elastic, scissors, needle and thread.

  1. Cut a rectangle of fabric 15cm wide by 6cm tall
  2. Fold the top edge over to create a 1cm channel for elastic
  3. Sew the channel, leaving a small opening
  4. Thread elastic through the channel
  5. Sew the elastic ends together and close the opening
  6. Sew the back seam to form a tube

You now have a simple elastic-waist skirt. Compare it with our Floral Pattern Dress Suit ($13.50) for styling inspiration.
